Century Plant
The Agave American is a Desert Plant With Many Medicinal and Cooking Uses
The Agave Americana is commonly known as the Century plant and American aloe. The Century plant has no stem. The leaves grow up to six feet long and ten inches wide, and have sharp spines on its tips and margins. The spines can grow more than an inch long. The plant grows naturally in the desert areas of Mexico.
Plant Culture
The Agave Americana will do best in soil that is sandy, well drained and on the slightly acidic side. This is a desert plant, and is known to be drought tolerant. It is only necessary to water the plant during the summer months. The plant prefers full sun, and can grow in USDA zones 8 through 11. The plant will die if exposed to frost or long frigid temperatures.
Best Usage:
In Mexico and Central America the Agave Americana is used as fencing on farms. Because of their sharp spines and margins they keep cattle in and people and predators out. The plant, used as an ornamental, makes a beautiful addition to any rock or cactus garden. The century plant can be grown in a container, however it's size will be much smaller than if it were grown in the ground.
Plant unique features:
The plant can take more than ten years to bloom in warm climate regions. In colder climates expect to wait as much as sixty years to see blooms. The Century plant is known to have medicinal properties. The juice extracted from its leaves is applied to bruises to speed healing. When taken orally, the juice is it believed to help with constipation, indigestion and flatulence.
The flower stalk has a sweet taste and can be roasted and eaten. The seeds are made into cooking flower and used in breads and soups. Tequila is made from the sap of the blue agave. From the blue Agave fruit a natural sweetener is produced and marketed as a sugar substitute.
