Blue Anemone Bulbs

Marine tank lighting?
We have a 55 gallon marine tank that we are slowly adding to. Right now we have some live rock, a clown trigger, two clowns (one with bubble anemone), a coral beauty and a couple damsels. We are currently using two 36 inch actinic bulbs, a 20,000k deep blue ocean Corallife bulb and a 10,000k Corallife..all in typical tank hood light fixtures. We have perfect water conditions but also seem to be getting a decent amount of hair algae. For filtration we are running a Fluval 305 w/powerhead and an Emperor waterfall as well as a protein skimmer and u/v sterilizer and an extra powerhead for bottom circulation. We have never lost a fish.. even our original damsels are thriving 2 years later. I'm just wondering if we should upgrade our lighting before we consider adding more inverts but I'd prefer not to spend hundreds if possible. Suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance
Have you had your current lighting running for the two years? If so, that's most likely one of your causes. Even though the tubes aren't burnt out, the wavelengths necessary for photosynthesis (this would include corals, anemones, clams as well as plants) start to deteriorate after 6 months. As the wavelengths shift, they favor nuisance algae more than macroalgaes, coralline algae, or vascular plants. You should plan on changing these out every year at the minimum.
Apart from that, it would have helped if you posted your actual values for the water testing. Nitrate (end product of the nitrogen cycle) is a plant and algae fertilizer, so this should be kept below 30ppm for fish, and as low as possible (definitely below 20ppm) for a reef tank. If you're using tapwater to mix your salt, this can be a source of nitrate as well as phosphate, another plant and algae fertilizer. Adding a phosphate absorbing pad can remove the phosphate which should cut back on the algae, or you might want to switch to reverse osmosis water which uses a special filtration process to remove nitrates, phoshpates, and other elements.

My 90 Gallon Reef Tank
t5 lighting for 20 gallon reef tank!?
There's a t5 lighting system available on ebay for about 30 dollars. I have a 20 gallon aquarium im looking to turn into a reef aquarium. Its a 20 high which is 24 in wide and the lighting system is only 14 inches long. The system comes with 3x 8 watt t5 lights one of which is a actinic blue light. Will this be sufficient lighting for corals and anemones or is it not good enough for them. If you could tell me what the lumens and kelvin of a t5 8 watt bulb is that would be great. Also what is the minimum lumens and kelvin is need for a 20 gallon tall tank. And don't worry im doing a lot of research before starting this tank that's why im asking....
In a nut shell, no that won't be enough lighting especially for anemones that need much more lighting.
Keep saving and buy a quality fixture, it will save you money in the long run. You won't have to buy a second fixture a few months down the road when you find out that is not enough light for your corals/anemone.
I would suggest looking for a 24" fixture that has 4 bulbs in it, two should be 10000K and the other two can be actinic (or one actinic and one 50/50 bulb). You should be able to find some fully assembled fixtures complete with bulbs for around the $150-200 range that would work well brand new, maybe under $100 if you can find used ones BUT the bulbs should be changed out about every 12-18 months so sometimes these used ones aren't that great of a deal if the bulbs have to be changed out.
If you don't want to keep an anemone and would just like to keep soft corals (like mushrooms and leather corals for example) you can probably get away with a 24" two bulb T5 fixture. You should be able to find these for around $60-70. One bulb should be 10000K and the other actinic. You could also start with one of the two bulb fixtures and then add a second one later on.
