Iris Rhizomes Iris I miss my Iris from my former house?
I sold my house in the winter and left alot of meaningful flowers mainly Iris and Peonies and many were heirlooms from my family and some I recieved as gifts. Would be inappropriate to stop by and ask if I could take some of the rhizomes to my new house? What would you do if someone asked you? Also in others peoples yards - have you ever asked if you could swap with them?
Mainly heartbroken over the iris from my friends - Persian Berry, Immorality, Babbling Brook, Gay Parasol, Superstition, Chasing Rainbows. Then my Great Grandmothers Dark Red Peony and another one called Bowl of Beauty. I am shopping for more but feel bad for those I left behind.
I moved alot out before listing the house before frost but forgot some important ones. I am not looking to leave holes. Rhizomes get divided anyway and don't really leave holes behind.
I couldn't take them with us when we moved in January 2004 because of freezing temperatures, so I went back in May when I could get some of each variety of iris (several you have mentioned). We had taken good care of them, so they were thriving, and the owner was glad to share, and I weeded their flower beds in return.
about how long before an iris grows 'more' rhizome?
I have a bunch of different ones that I bought... I want to share (eventually) .. how long before they develop rhizomes? and do they do it one at a time?
Every 2-3 years they are ready to be thin out due to over crowding. Then at the time is best to share. When you have move leaf stalks than bloom, is a good indication there ready Best of luck to you.
Bearded Iris Beautiful planting bearded iris over daffodils and hyacinths?
i have a bed of daffodils and scented hyacinths. well this year a large portion of the daffodils did not flower and the hyacinth flower stems were a little weak, but they did flower. but anyway, i was going to till over the ground and plant bearded iris rhizomes, which can be planted barely above ground level. should I dig up the daffodil and hyacinth bulbs, OR just plant over them, and see what happens? I think Bearded iris are so beautiful, and they look ugly after the flowers die like hyacinths and daffodils.
but i dont know where the daffodil or hyacinths bulbs are underground, so im wondering should I just plant the iris's regardless, because basically the whole area is covered wit daffodils.
Daffodils can multiply over time and become overcrowded, reducing blooming.
Hyacinths are basically treated as annuals. The first year they bloom nicely. After that the blooms become sparse and not as pretty. Tulips are usually planted as annuals also, for the same reason.
Dig up the bed and separate the daffodil bulbs. Replant those. Discard the hyacinths.
One of the tricks to having a beautiful flower bed is to practice subsequent planting. As one plant is finishing blooming, another is just coming into bloom and the foliage covers the foliage left from the earlier plants.
Edit: Daffodils are usually planted about 6-8 inches deep. I would turn the whole bed over and amend the soil with good compost. This will ensure that your bed is in good condition for planting.
My bearded dragon sleeps directly below the heat lamp and his tank is not that tall, so I was worried if theres a chance he might overheat. I know bearded dragons are naturally from a very hot climate, but how hot is too hot?
Your beardie shouldn't overheat if the heat is coming from above, but you do need to watch out if it is coming from below. Lizards have much better heat sensors in their backs than bellies, so they easily let themselves burn by accident if they are sitting on hot rocks or over heat mats. Since you use a heat lamp, just make sure the basking temp is somewhere around 90-95 degrees fahrenheit (that's a guess, I forget exact values but it's around there) and that you have a cool side of the tank and you're fine. As long as the temp isn't too high he shouldn't burn even if he's under there all day long. My bearded stays under his lamp for whole days without detriment as well, though he has slightly burned his belly from repeated laying on heat mat. Though that was minor and it healed when he shed his skin.
Elliptical Trainers VS Treadmills, Which Provides the Better Workout?
I am often asked about which of the two pieces provide the best workout from customers who are looking for cardiovascular equipment along with a multitude of other questions like what is the best elliptical stride length. According to wikipedia the first elliptical trainer was designed by a man named Larry D. Miller back in the year 2004 and was patented and marketed by Precor Fitness. The idea was to develop a machine that most closly replicated the movement of running without the impact on the joints.
Over the past 5-6 years ellipticals have taken the fitness industry by storm and every fitness equipment manufacturer has jumped on the bandwagon to develop the next revolutionary elliptical. Initially most elliptcials only worked the lower body with the Precor being one of the few that offered a variation in ramp height which has made even the older used model Precor ellipticals remain in high demand. Many will agree that elliptical trainers have tremendous popularity almost eliminating the old StairMaster as the optional cardio training choice in today's state of the art facilities. People often ask about the elliptical stride length also and I have found there to be little or no effect on the quality of the workout other than what feels most comfortable to the user. Most high end ellipticals for the home or commercial have anywhere from 17.5 to 21 inch stride length and will probably not make much difference unless your very short or very tall. Some low end home units can have very short stride lengths and feel unusually awkward , which is a pretty good indiction of the quality of the workout you can expect.
Benefits Of Elliptical Trainers over Treadmills
Elliptical Trainers create less impact on the knees, feet, hips and back and therefore reduce the stress on the joints when compared to similar intensity on a treadmill. Today's newer ellipticals offer both lower body and upper body training which bring more muscles into action and can intensify the workout. Surprisingly to some, studies have shown that the both the treadmill and elliptical trainers work the heart, lungs and burn calories equally. Runners seem to prefer treadmills over ellipticals.Treadmills have been around a long time and they have proved effective at burning calories and improving cardiovascular function so for most of us it really comes down to preference. Elliptical trainers simply provide a newer type of equipment for accomplishing the same goal, as many would agree that it can get a bit mundane training on the same exercise equipment everyday and in fact can encourage the body to respond due to the varying of the exercise and intensity level. Regardless of what choice you make the benefits are there.
