Grow Your Own Is it healthier to grow your own food?
Such as your own Vegetables like, tomatoes, lettuce, spinach, squash, onions, etc.
And to get your milk, eggs, & meat from your own cows and chicken. (if you own some.)
We already own a cow and chicken farm...but I was wondering if maybe I should make a garden with fruits and veggies. But if home grown foods aren't much better than store bought..then I don't want to go through the trouble.
Is it better for maintaining a healthy weight?
Thanks for the answers!
It's absolutely healthier to grow your own food. The produce you see in supermarkets may look fresh, but a lot of it has gone through days and sometimes thousands of miles of travel after being plucked semi-raw from the plants or trees (so that it would not spoil en route). A lot of nutrients are lost along the way due to heat, improper storage, too much handling, etc.
When you grow your own produce, you harvest it and eat it right there and then. Much, much more nutritious and tasty.Plus, you save money, as someone else noted.
Later on this year when the weather's warmer I want to grow some cherry tomatoes in the greenhouse.
I posted this in V&V because of the correltation between 'vegetarians/vegans' and 'vegetables'. LOL. And I'm curious to know if any of you grow your own organic, homegrown veg.
Hey dude.......I grow what I can in my small city backyard. Tomatoes, habaneros, jalapenos, cayennes, green bells, banana peppers (Hungarian Wax peppers), oregano, cilantro, dill, and basil. A group of friends readily trades what they grow too so I have access to olther fresh grown produce as well.
Good luck with your garden! Freshly picked produce is so good it will spoil you away from store bought
I use a product called "Miracle-Gro" and I doubt it's organic. I don't spray any pesticides organic or otherwise. Inner city pests of that variety are few and far between.
Grow Flower Bulbs Do Bearded Iris's grow bulbs on the plant after flowering?
Down the street from my house, there are tons of bearded iris's. They are really pretty and I would like some in my yard. Every year, I notice that after blooming they grow a round green ball (size of a peach). I was wondering if I took it off and planted it in my yard, will it grow? And how far would I need to plant them under the ground? Thanks,
That's a seed pod. It will have several seeds inside. Yes, if planted and grown, they will grow into an iris. But growing a bearded iris from seed will take about 3 years before you see a flower. And if it cross-pollinated with another iris, the color may be different than the flower the seed came from.
To get another iris just like your neighbor's, either ask them what the variety is, and go get one, or ask if you could have a "start" (a piece of the root), the next time they thin or divide their irises.
