Perennial Garden Plan I'm planning a three seasons garden?
I live in Maryland so my zone is about a 7. I need plants that are low maintenance perennials. The idea is for a community garden that I'm planning for a project. Any other ideas for plants or things to do with the garden?
Basically I want to know how to make it look good with as little maintenance as possible, someone mentioned that I should get together a plan of what I want it to look like and divide it up into easy to manage segments. I have an absolutely vast back garden which is about half the size of a football pitch and my two front gardens probably make up the same.
It's a lot of hard work to try and keep on top of cutting the hedge and mowing the lawn and I want something that is very simple, looks good, and somewhere I can relax in the summer. Is there any sort of perennial flowers I can use that need little if any maintenance? someone mentioned I should just plant rose bushes as it's simply a case of cutting them back and weding out around them every once in a while. ANY other hints/tips/ideas are GREATLY welcomed.
Thanks for your help.
I have a large garden and I design gardens. I say to people don't worry about getting things perfect, and park like, it is impossible unless you have a gardener or three (25 acres needs up to 10 gardeners).
Perennials usually involve at least annual maintenance and grass is heavy maintenance. If you are going to stay for many years, get a garden designer to design you a garden and then gradually build it as time and money allows.
Large gardens with lower maintenance usually involve plenty of trees, shrubs and under plantings of ground cover. Layer your shrubs into say three layers higher at the back then medium and then low. its also a great idea to divide the area into garden rooms, so you don't see all of the garden at once. make people want to see whats around the next bend. As the garden is so large you can also have features such as mini forest of trees such as birch. Under planted with nice ground covers you can use up large areas of land and no pruning or mowing necessary.
My garden is never 'manicured', I just do my best and most people don't notice to much wrong. Don't make it a trial or you won't enjoy it. I always wanted to live in a park and even though it's far from perfect, I love my lifestyle.
Rare Hawaii Mix Filipino guy with a Japanese Haole Girl?
I am from Hawaii and there are many filipino guys here. I cannot stress enough how much I wish I was filipino because im scared they may not like me because I am not filipino, I am very respectful, I enjoy there food I always smile even though I have no idea what they are saying (always speaking Ilocano, ALWAYS!) so Im trying to learn some ilocano so they know I very much respect there culture and I do feel uncomftorable having no idea what they are saying. I always stress about it because I dont know if they like me or if they are just acting as if they do. Pleeease help! (Im asking because its a little bit rare to see a mixed filipino, they very much rather marry there own people it seems)
oh be proud of being Japanese, I'm a Filipino (25% Jap) and everytime I see a foreigner who loves and knows how to respect our culture... I fall in love with them (of course only the guys). It's really really rare to see those kinds of people, there aren't much of them in this world.
A friendly advice to you, is not to even look for the Filipino for you.. It will be very easy for a Filipino to be destined for you because it seems you're into our culture (I think). You'll just meet Mr. Right, if you don't look for him. Trust me.. My grandparents (mom's side) grew up in such far away places, yet we're made for each other.
Wow, hehe..my dad's ilocano. Seems like I've got the blood of every person you put there. weeee.
Volcano eruptions are becoming increasingly rare. That's because very few active volcanoes still exist. In fact, according to the Global Volcanism Program, only 50 to 70 volcanoes erupt worldwide every year. That means being able to witness an active volcano - especially one that frequently erupts - can be a once-in-a-lifetime experience. For those lucky enough to visit the Big Island of Hawaii, you may become one of the privileged few who get to view this amazing site.
On the Big Island, inside Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, you'll find Kilauea, proclaimed to be the most active volcano in the world. Although documented through chants and songs in ancient Hawaiian history, the first record of Kilauea is that of missionary Rev. William Ellis who saw the summit in 1823. At almost 4,200 feet above sea level, Kilauea has erupted over 60 times in its recorded history with its most recent eruption to date on July 21, 2007.
While most people are conditioned to think of volcanic eruptions as a violent, erratic explosion that projects gallons of liquid lava wildly into the air, this is rarely the case. While nonetheless intriguing, eruptions at Kilauea are more of a slow spewing of thick, red-hot lava that mixes and melds with dried, black lava rock as it persistently carves out a new path.
According to the National Park Service, "Activity on Kilauea continues as magma vigorously pushes to the surface, forming a river of lava." This sight can be seen firsthand during numerous tours available each day at the park.
The Crater Rim Drive is a one- to three-hour tour taken by car with intermittent short walks throughout. Stretching 11 miles, you'll travel a well-marked route with scenic stops along the way. If you have more time, you may want to take the four- to five-hour tour and explore the coastal areas. This 20-mile route descends 3,700 feet. For those who prefer to walk, an abundance of trails lend themselves to day hikes and wilderness hikes where visitors can often view active lava flows.
Cruise ships sailing between the Hawaiian Islands, including those from Norwegian Cruise Lines, make a point to conduct night tours, so passengers can get front-row seats for the spectacular show. The brilliant colors of orange, red and yellow churn as billowing smoke rises each time lava pours into the ocean below. Much more visible at night, Kilauea is quite a spectacle and always a highlight of any cruise.
Whether you choose to tour Hawaii's most active volcano by land, sea or both, you're sure to find it a thrilling experience you won't soon forget. Considering most people won't have the opportunity to visit a live volcano, you can consider yourself an honored guest of the Islands who has witnessed a positively astonishing act of nature.
Flower Gardens Plans Can someone give some flower suggestions?
The spot I'm planning to plant a flower garden is 20 feet in length and 4 feet in length. Its in a very sunny during the noon and evening times. I live in 8a zone.
Please give me some tips too, since I'm an extreme beginner.
I meant 20 feet in length and 4 feet in width.
From my experience, the most important thing for beginner is to understand the sun requirement. If you know it, you will have 50% success. The rest is good soil, water, fertilizer and prevent bugs or other creatures from eating your plants.
Most beginners are more likely to under estimate the sunlight, I've been there so I know
All sun lover plants need at least 6 hrs of DIRECT sunlight and this is called full sun. So no big tree around or shade from house.
Part Sun: 4-6 hours direct sunlight.
Part Shade: 2-4 hours direct sunlight. Need protection from hot afternoon sunlight.
Full Shade: less than 2 hours of sunlight. Avoid direct afternoon sunlight.
If you're not sure with the light in your garden, you can plant full sun annual this year like Zinnia, Cosmos and Marigold. If they bloom alot and grow strong, it means you have full sun, if they get leggy, weak and only bloom one or two, it means part shade.
I suggest you start with annuals before you buy more expensive perennial plants. I started gardening because I want cutting flowers and I grew zinnia from seeds. You can buy plants from local nursery if you don't want to start them from seeds just start small first since you're not sure about the light condition. Start with zinnia, coleus and impatiens, place them in your flower garden and see which ones grow happy there. Zinnia is sun lover, Coleus is partial sun/partial shade, Impatiens is shade lover.
After you are sure about the sun condition, you can buy perennials or mix 80% perennial and 20% annual. Perennial is your money saver and annual will give you lot of flowers.
Annual for landscape:
Petunia, Coleus, Bedding Begonia, Impatiens, Marigold, Pansy.
Annual for cutting:
Zinnia, Cosmos, Statice, Carnation.

Growing Flower Gardens : How to Arrange a Flowerbed
May I bring my personal photo equipment to Zilker Gardens?
It is a "professional" SLR digital camera + tripod...but I only use it for personal use. I'd LOVE to practice my macro photography on the flowers there.
Is that allowed in the garden? I know some places allow cameras...but not "professional" equipment. I plan to call tomorrow unless someone can answer my question before then.
Thank you!
Your choice to call first is a good one. Marching into the gardens area and setting up equipment might cause a problem. I've been lucky enough over the years to be able to get some great shots by asking first.
