Flower Seeds Variety
What are some good/basic types of seeds?
I'm doing a preschool lesson with plant seeds, where they will sort the different types of seeds. I want a variety of types of seeds (size-not too small, color, shape) and also types (flower, vegetable, tree, herb etc.)
Can you suggest any good seeds to use for this?
Cinnamon Basil for starters. For obvious reasons. Can you imagine how cute it will be to have preschoolers saying "cinnamon?"
There's another reason. Cinammon basil has been going to space for years as a part of a cooperative program with the Park Seed Co. in South Carolina and NASA. Might be something to springboard off of. But these are pre-K's, so I'll just give the link to that program as well as great online pre-K programs from National Geographic and the Smithsonian Institution in the link box below.
Hands down, you can't miss with sunflower seeds. But you really need to show them the plant itself if you can. The seed heads are artwork (at least Van Gogh thought so).
Now on a simpler level, you can make this very process intensive, but hands-on, by visiting your local produce department:
Orange seed - put the orange and seed side by side, you may want to count the number of seeds in one fruit
Lemon seed - put the lemon and seed side by side
Avocado seed - put the pit and avocado side by side
Then visit your local nursery. Pick any plant that has seeds on it. Even a bean. Ask for a clipping of the seed pod with a branch. They shouldn't make you buy it. I don't think pre-K's need to worry about legumes, fruits, vegetables. If they have an orange or lemon tree, get a clipping of that to go with your citrus.
Then show them a hickory nut, an acorn, anything from your local environment. Let's see, what time of year is it? PUMPKIN seeds and a pumpkin. Can't beat that. Anything they see.
Nice thing is, lots of stuff, even grasses right now, are "going to seed" and putting out their progeny. If you are going to show them a seed, you may want to consider they need to be able to associate the seed with a plant they can see, smell, touch. Not a picture. So if you have a zinnia and the seed, great. If you have a marigold and its seeds, great! But this time of year, you may not have all these wonderful flowers.
Finally, get a handful of ryegrass, bluegrass or something similar from your local farmer's co-op, nursery or even health food store. You may also want to try a separate project of barley or wheat. Plant one or two pots of these grasses or cereals. Keep them in a windowbox near the sunlight. Water to keep the seedbed moist. And show the kids what happens. I'm seeding God's little acre here with fescue right now, so believe me, it is the time of year no matter where you are for growing grasses. Takes a week or three for lawn-type grasses to germinate and grow a few inches.

Check with seed supply stores near by.
There is one in Bombay India that keeps all kind of seeds.
It is located across from Byculla Railway Station. It is also very near Bombay 27 Post Office. There is a lane/road next to it and the post office is reachable by that lane.
In USA go to any nursery and see if they have a catalogue and request to look at them, if they do not stock this seed, you will find it in one of the catalogue.
Go on line and search, use any search block like G"gogle" and put "seeds of VIPUL variety of Marigold flower".
Or put "flower seed supplyer" then go to their site and use their "Contact Us" button, and request the info.
